Working with a Stylist: Unlocking Your Unique Style

Q & A with Nancy Amoroso

Philly native, Nancy Amoroso, is an expert when it comes to working with TV News talent, politicians and athletes. Her knowledge of style and runway trends has made her a go-to for brides and private clients who call on her for everything from a black tie event, to a vacation with the family. Social media has turned many a fashion-lover into an “expert,” with Insta bios touting them as “personal stylists…” So, I sat down with Amoroso to find out what makes her unique…

JK: When did you fall in love with fashion?

NA: From an early age, I discovered my passion for style, thanks to my father's influence as a women's retailer. For me, the world of fashion and dressing up has always been about self-expression and creativity. I developed a keen eye for fashion and an appreciation for the art of dressing.

JK: You can look at an article of clothing on a hanger and immediately know whether it will flatter a client’s body, or just won’t work. How do you know?

NA: I loved visiting showrooms in NYC, where my dad taught me to consider different sizes and body shapes, and to move beyond my personal preferences to cater to diverse tastes and needs. I worked as a buyer for a prestigious men's store, where meticulous attention to detail required in men's fashion, fueled my passion even further. I discovered the joy of taking basic clothing pieces and elevating them with the perfect accessories, while creating options to fit each individual's unique personality.

JK: Your clientele is very diverse. How do you shop for people of all ages and budgets, with so many different needs?

NA: Fashion should be accessible to everyone, regardless of budget. I take immense pleasure in helping individuals explore their potential and express themselves through their style. It's not just about the clothes; it's about building confidence and empowering my clients to embrace their individuality.

JK: When you work with a client, there is so much more to this than just shopping…

NA: My approach to styling goes beyond clothing. I view the entire package, including hair and makeup, as essential components in enhancing one's overall appearance and self-assurance. There's nothing more fulfilling than witnessing the transformation of my clients as they step into their newfound style and radiate with self-assurance.

JK: What are a few timeless pieces that every woman should own?

NA: A black dress can work for day and night, and can be styled with multiple accessories. Another staple is a tailored black blazer, that can be worn with jeans, mini or maxi skirts, over a dress, with tanks and tees and turtlenecks.

JK: Is there an accessory that you consider splurge-worthy for your clients?

NA: Yes, women need to invest in a good handbag. It will give you years of versatility if you find a great bag in a classic style and in a neutral shade like black or tan.

JK: You have the most incredible closet, yet you only travel with a carry-on bag. Why?

NA: Travel is challenging enough as is, so your wardrobe should be a no-brainer. Pack key pieces that are interchangeable and effortless, with basics that work together.

JK: Finally, is there one piece of clothing or accessory you can’t live without?

NA: A great pair of jeans…
